There is some confusion on the amount for membership dues in New Mexico. A Post decides what they will charge for membership dues. This may or may not be in their bylaws. When a Post submits they’re yearly
revalidation, there is a place on the first page to designate how much the Post retains for it self.
The amount that goes to Department and to National is voted on by Department and National, this may or may not change each year. For everyone’s information, the current amount that goes to Department is $10.00 per annual member, and the amount that goes to National is $13.00 per annual member. Life Membership dues are $150.00, of which $37.50 is retained by the Post and $37.50 is for Department, and the remaining $75.00 goes to National.
To summarize: annual dues are $23.00, of which $10.00 goes to Department and $13.00 goes to National. Any figure above that amount is what the Post has decided it wants to keep. An example is; Hypothetically- Post 5000 decides it wants to charge $30.00 per annual member, of that $30.00, $10.00 goes to Department, $13.00 goes to National, and the remainder of $7.00 is retained by the Post.
One last item, there is confusion over the renewal notice's that are being mailed to members by National. Please disregard any amount that is on those renewals, unless you are a Member at Large (MAL). If you are a member of a Post, please take the renewal form to your 1st Vice and he will ensure you pay the correct amount for your Post, and issue you your new card. If you can not make it to your Post to pay your dues, make sure the mailing address on the renewal is to your Post 1st Vice, and then call to make sure you send the correct amount. Please beware of a scam that is happening in New Mexico!!!! If you receive a renewal that has a return address of anything besides your Post address or Department's address, DO NOT mail it!!! Please forward the item to Department and we will try and stop this from happening anymore.
